Spring Break

I look forward  to the coming of spring break so much! After two months of exhausted class schedules, I really need a break! For both mentally and physically. But since the spring break only last for seven days (or less?), I am not planning for any long trip with in the coming of vacation. It would be great to just stay home and relax my life. I want to sleep until noon, make myself a delicious lunch, and perhaps go to the nearest shopping mall from my house. Oh, I might go to the car maintenance to check my car's status. see if I need to do the alignment or not.

Yap, that will be all for my spring break planning. But since " Plan can not catch change", maybe I will have another plan for my vacation. I just want to finish all my annoying homeworks and tests right  now!

Dr. Dolittle

(The movie Dr. Dolittle reminds me a bad memory 10 years ago. I was still a little girl at that time, spending my summer vacation in California with my aunt. I went to see Dr. Dolittle with my cousin, but I can barely understand what was the movie about. My English is not good enough to catch up all the words from the movie, so I just sit there like an idiot watching people laughing crazily. Ever since that day, I hate this movie lol )

I used to have a dog--Lucky, who happens to be the cutest Maltese in the world.(I believe every owner would feel the same way to their pet.) If he could speak, the first question I might ask him is " Who do you love most? Daddy? Mommy? Older brother? or ME?" The answer had better be me or else I will ask him to shut up. Among four of our family, I might be the one who treated him best. I took shower for him, I sometimes fed him steak, and I even let him share my pillow. So if I am not his "significant other", I would definitely feel heart breaking.

Next question I want to ask him is that " Are you gay? " or " Are you interested in other species more than dogs?" This is because one of my friend tried to match her female Maltese to my dog. When the female Maltese came to my house, Lucky just stare at her for a while and doesn't feel excited at all. We try to turn off the light and create a romantic atmosphere, but he just didn't do what all male animals usually do when they see female. " Maybe they feel shy to do such things in front of us" my friend try to explained for Lucky. So we put them in to a room for about two hours. After several days, I called to my friend asking her if we have any good news, but the answer is no. One strange thing is that another friend of mine took her mini pig to my house and Lucky is so crazy about her. He kept chasing and smelling at the mini pig as if she was the hottest girl he had ever seen. He really has to answer this question to clear out my doubt.

It has been five years since Lucky passed away. I miss him a lot! I have his picture in my schedule book which I bring it everyday with me, and I set him as my desktop picture so that I can see his big smile whenever I think about him. Maybe one last question here for Lucky, " will you be part of our family next time?"

Advice

In Taiwan, we have a clollege entrance test just like the SAT in US. All the high school students seeking to go to college are required to attend the test on July1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The tolal score of the tests are importantant of course, but there are still some basic limitation of different subject socres from various departments of universities. Different departments emphasize on different subjects. Once the score report was released from the internet, I sought for my mom's advice.

My mom is quite a dominate mom. To be honest, she alwasys thinks that her advice is the best of the world. As her daughter, I actually have no choice but to listen my mom's "suggestion." She analyzed my score report card and concluded that i got a higher Math, Manderine, and English score of all the subjects. The toatl score was not high enough to be enrolled in the top and second business school in Taiwan. I personally refused to go to the third business school because it is really far way from my house. My mom then suggested me to take a forieng language as my major in the second business school ( NCCU) which was also famouse for the foriengh language studies. Japanese and English were the most popular major during that period of time in Taiwan, however, my mom asked me to majored in Korean instead of those two majors. Her pespective was that both languages are too commonly used in the world, we should've differenciated ourselves with others so we can have more working opportunities. The final goal my mom asked my to accomplish is that to trasfer to business major in my second year and then make Korean as my minor.

In the end, I am still that well-behaviored little girl as she always expected me to be. I successfully got transfered to the risk management major and took Korean as my minor for the rest of three years. And as for the opportunities from the job markets? It actually worked! This is why there's an old saying from Chinese called" Always follow what old people ask you to do".

American Food

Simple, cold, greasy, and unhealthy are all the adjectives that I can think of when describing American food. Hamburger, hamburger, hamburger, and hamburger are another four nouns that I can come up with when thinking of American food. As a Taiwanese, I am so proud of my country's food, and yes, I can surely tell you how different  the food is between America and Taiwan.

Take breakfast in these two countries for example, American tend to eat cold food whereas Taiwanese like to eat hot dishes. People here like to eat sandwich, toast, and salad for breakfast. From a traditional Taiwanese perspective, those "food" are more like side dishes or light refreshments rather than a real "meal." Taiwanese like hot dishes for breakfast such as pork porridge with egg, noodle with soup or a bowl of rice with few side dishes. It is because the old generation thinks hot dishes can warm our stomach thus enabling better blood circulation.

Another amazing difference is that the food variety in my country is far multiple than that in America. Food choices here are less because American doesn't have as many cooking styles as Taiwanese does. Take beef for example, we have fried beef rice, beef noodle, beef stew, steamed beef  and boil beef soup in Taiwan. However, for American food here, all I can think about are just steak and hamburger's beef.

Well, I can accept the cold, greasy, and unhealthy food sometimes, but definitely not everyday. Thank god I am living in a city where English is actually a second language here, I can always grab any kinds of Taiwanese food whenever I feel like it.

Optimistic Quote

Winston Churchill, president of United Kingdom , once said that "A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." Indeed, It is all about our choices to become a pessimist or optimist. As for me, I am 80% optimist and 20% pessimist.

If you ask my mom whether I am an optimist or pessimist, she would definitely answer you "optimist." There is one famous example my mom often makes fun on me--Whenever I ask my daughter her school test ranking, if she's no. 20(out of 30) in the class, she would proudly and calmly reply to me, "but there are still 10 people behind me!!"  If you ask my brother about me, he would also tell you I am a optimistic person. " How did you do on your math test, Cyndy?" asked by my brother. "Not bad, I get 98"replied with ready-to-be compliment voice "oh? then how many people get full score?" "er.....hnm.....20 people...." "............okay....." Yes, I myself have to admit that I always look at the bright side of life.

What about the rest 20% of my pessimistic personality? I don't think I am an ENTIRE 100% optimistic person, to be honest, I think most of my optimistic characteristic comes from my pessimistic side. Whenever I am facing a difficult problem or making a critical decision, I always think about what if the worst situation happen? Can I handle it? or can I accept it? If I can persuade myself to accept the worst part, then the clouds on top of my head will soon disappear.

Life is never easy, not to mention a student's life. When you see a list of presentation, essay, and group project assignments, you do need to have an optimistic personality to deal with them!

Birds of a Feather

" By parents at home, depend on the friends outside" an Chinese old saying said so. Friends are so indispensable in our daily life. Friends can be a good garbage can while you are upset or depressed and be a good guide whenever you feel lost in life. I met different types of friends in different stages in my life, some of them are similar to me but some are different.

Joanne, one of my high school friends, has a same birthday and blood type with me. Our classmates always say we are twins, because we have so much things in common. We both love to play tennis, go swimming and enjoy traveling around the world. The most incredible part is that we can feel and understand each other without any words. We often speak out the exactly same words in the same time.

Helen, in the other hand, has different characteristic and hobbies with me. She is my university classmates who is such a crazy girl. Helen is good at imitating other's facial expression. She always feel free to make a show in front of people whenever she feels like it. She is super out-going, talkative and creative, which is a bit different from me. But still, we share our secret and life together.

"Every person is a new door to a different world.", no matter they are different from me or similar to me, I treasure every friendship I have in my life.

Getting Around

LA is a very attractive city, with her nice weather, beautiful beaches and various entertainments. But as for public transportation? It is terrible. How terrible is it? Let's take the route from my house(@Hacienda Heights)  to school for example. First choice--take subway. Ooops, I don't see any of it. Second choice--take train. Oh my god, how I go to the train station is even a bigger problem. Third choice--take bus. The nearest bus station from my house takes 25 minutes by walk,  plus the time waiting for the bus, transferring to several buses, and the actual transportation time, by the time I arrive school, the school is close! The only choice for me to go to school is driving. Unfortunately, I hate driving. The first thing I came to USA is learn how to drive. Yes, I never drive before and I am certainly not a person who enjoys such things. How I get my driver license is another story.

The public transportation system in my country is way too convenient comparing to that in LA. We have a subway system linking two main cities, amazing bus system taking people from mountain to sea, and high speed rail system connecting cities from north to south. People do drive in my country, but most of people prefer to use public transportation to commute. It takes me 1 minute to go to subway station and 3 minutes to bus station from my house, why bother to drive a car ?

I guess I am just too spoiled by my country's awesome public transportation system, so I can't get used to the living style in LA. Well, I will try harder to adapt myself to it, and please be patient if you happen to drive behind a gold Toyota Camry. I will be very appreciate : )

Life Soundtrack

Have you ever feel the moment that hits the spot and say "yes! this is the song!" after listening to a certain song? I did! of course there might be a lot of love songs that many girls may think of "oh, it was a song made for me." But except for those romantic songs, there is one song that perfectly describe my recent life. That is " the climb" form Miley Cyrus. It is actually a song I recieved from a friend when I was in a deep depression because of the GMAT test.

I was suppose to be enrolled into the 2010 Fall semester graduate school. However, as you can see, I didn't do well on the GMAT test which the school required,  so I am now here in ALP program. Study abroad has always been my goal since I graduated from the university. My ideal plan was to have a one year working experience and then study in finance related graduate program. After graduate from school, I plan to stay at USA to work for 2-3 years. What a wonderful plan, isn't it? But life has not always been so easy and perfect. I didn't get the admission from my ideal school and I have to make a plan B. I was so depressed and hopeless at that moment, thinking of my life is done. My friend tried to cheer me up so he send this song to me.

When I first listen to "the climb", the melody sounds so familiar to me. After reading lyrics from the song, I feel so inspired and decided to move on again. My favorite part of lyrics is "There's always gonna be another mountain.I'm always gonna wanna make it move.Always gonna be an up-hill battle.Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose.Ain't about how fast I get there.Ain't about what's waiting on the other side. It's the climb" I keep those words in mind. Whenever I feel frustrated or upset, this song always give me the courage to keep moving forward.

weather

Many new immigrants from Taiwan choose to stay in California for the nicer weather. Weather here in Cali is always sunshine sunshine and sunshine. If we describe it in a song, it is definitely a super boring song. People sometimes complain that Cali has NO weather at all, but  they still enjoy living with it pretty much. They can go to beach almost in every month of a year, they don't need to clean up the snow on the road in the early morning, and they don't have to worry about the flood might sweep away their house.Yes, California is such a human-friendly place to live in.

In my home country, there are four seasons all the year around. Winter there is cold  but it doesn't snow. Spring is my favorite season because it has the most comfortable temperature. During fall, everything becomes so sad and grey. Summer in Taiwan is intolerable because it is so hot and humid that you might have to take a shower for at least three times a day to clean up all the sweat.  The most attracting part of living in a country with distinct seasons is that I can buy a lot of different clothes for different seasons. Weather is always a good excuse for shopping. But if I have to choose one between California and Taiwan, I would vote for Cali because I can definitely save some money.

Fear

(till now I found out that we have a topic of our journal.....gosh)
When talking about fear, the first thing came into my mind would be darkness. It is hard to imagine how I fear of being in a dark place. I have no idea why I am so afraid of dark, perhaps I had been lost or abandoned in a dark night in a age which I can't remember?! Whenever I am in a place, a room or on the car which has no light in it, I start to feel anxious. At first, the feeling of anxious would  swallow me up, and then I would begin very very nervous. I always feel someone standing at my back or sneaking around me when being surrounded by darkness. I can't sleep in a room without any lights turning on, or else my eyes will keep open the whole night. I can't stay home alone without anyone accompany me through the night.

Afraid of darkness makes my life pretty inconvenient since it is a enemy I have to face to everyday. I tried to overcome my fears of dark but I failed every time. It is so weired that all my imagination will come up when I am staying in a dark place. I hope that sooner or later I can overcome my fear, or maybe I can wait till the day living in south pole.

♥Happy Chinese New Year♥

Today is Chinese new year's eve, this is also my first time celebrating Chinese new year outside my home country. It is so sad that we can't have a day off for new year since we are now in America. It is even more sad that my parents, aunties, and cousins called me to say happy new year this morning when I was on my way driving to school ! Imagine the feeling that all your friends and families are having fun and celebrating the holiday but you have to go to a 8:00 morning class! I am physically driving but my heart already fly for thousand of miles back to Taiwan.

Fortunately, I am now living with my aunt who stays in America for more than decades but still following Chinese tradition. We had a hot pot with some fresh beef and sea food. After dinner, we played black jack instead of playing mahjong. Most important of all, I got a red envelope from my aunt! As long as I can get a red envelope, I guess it really doesn't matter to me for having class in the new year.

Happy Chinese New Year

Vegas trip

Last week my friend came to US for 5 days. It is actually his first time visiting here, so I know that I am responsible to introduce the beauty of this country since I am now living here( I hope this a good reason to be absent in class, lol),so we went to Vegas last weekend!!!

This is actually my third or maybe fourth time visiting Vegas, but it is my first time to drive there instead of taking the tour bus. It took us about three and a half to four hours to drive from my house to Vegas. Though I am not a good driver, but i am indeed a good " direction reporter". We followed the direction made by our GPS, and I repeated the words of our GPS lady loudly and clearly to the driver.

Since Vegas is a city never sleeps, she becomes more beautiful as night goes darker. We visited several famous luxurious hotels such as Aria, Bellagio, Venetian and Mirage. The free shows that each hotels performed are fantastic and terrific. And how can you miss the best part of the Vegas--casino! Since I am really not a gambling person, the only thing I did is using the slot machines which is the easiest game of all the casino. I guess it's because of the " beginner's luck", my friend won 175 dollars in less than 5 minutes by playing Black Jack.

Well, Vegas is a place gives people drams and hopes, and I am sure I will be back soon.

My first article writing in US

It has been over six months since I came to US, time does fly! I was living with my brother in his little dorm at UCLA before, and then I moved back to Hacienda Heights and now staying with my aunt's family. Though this is not my first time visiting US, to be honest, I am quite familiar with California State, but there are still a lot of things that I have to get used to it . The most challenging thing I am dealing with is "DRIVING"! I am never a girl who is so good at such boyish things. I never ever drive before, at least not until when I came to US. People keep telling me the traffic here is way better than my hometown country Taiwan, but this doesn't make me feel relax at all. At first, every time when I think of driving, I feel headache or stomachache! I even feel like I want to go back to my country which is way more convenient that you don't need to drive for having dinner in McDonald. But I guess stress pushes people to grow up, I am now feeling a lot better in this driving things, though sometimes I still can't stop feeling the car driving in the back is going to hit me ! My newest challenges would be finding parking space and park it straightly in CSUF. I do prey for god for giving me parking space everyday!
